In their Seattle studio, master glass blowers craft our Leo/Sun glass paperweight from molten glass heated to over 2000°F inside a fiery furnace. Ash from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens serves as the secret ingredient in their proprietary glass formula. Unique details, representative of the Sun, are formed by rolling the heated glass in colored glass powders, shaping with hand tools and adding gold leaf and dichroic glass pieces to the surface for an iridescent effect. After the features are formed, they are then surrounded by clear molten glass, shaped into its rounded form and polished to a smooth finish. This glass paperweight is masterfully handcrafted, uno alla volta, from the hearts and hands of artisans. No two are exactly alike. Each paperweight measures approx. 3 in. diameter.

Handmade goods have cultural significance in almost every subculture and financial class. While the upper echelon may delight in the exclusivity of an object, crafting culture permeates the trendy shops of modern-day, millennial Brooklyn, and led the grassroots, ultra-feminist Riot Grrrl movement of the early 1990s. From punk musicians to polished socialites, an appreciation for handcrafted, one-of-a-kind wares is a common thread that connects us to our humanity. This work reminds us that our fingers can do so much more than just operate machines. It connects us to our cultures, our ancestors, our neighbors, and even strangers from faraway places, just through placing a single object between our palms.
