Clip on earrings have flourished as a fashion icon since their invention in the 1930’s. This no-piercing-necessary earring revolutionized the earring and jewelry industry for decades. This newer clipping mechanism fits earrings more securely to the ear than “screw-ons,” the forerunner of the clip-on.
Pierced ears were considered vulgar in the early twentieth century. Hollywood actresses and flappers were responsible for sparking interest in costume accessories, leading the way for fashion statements made by clip-on earrings. Clip-on earrings compliment any type of jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, brooches, pins, and pendants.
There are several advantages to wearing clip-on earrings as opposed to earrings for pierced ears. Clip-on earrings allow those who have allergies to particular metals or who are at risk for minor infections to wear fashionable earrings without piercing their ears. Also, clip-on earrings can be much heavier than pierced earrings eliminating the danger of stretching and dragging down the pierced ear lobe.
There are three clip-on style earring variations, including ear screws, spring hoops, and ear cuffs. Ear screws are one of the earliest styles of clip-on earrings, where the earring is fit to the ear using a small screw that is placed on the back of the lobe. Spring hoop earrings are fit to the ear with a spring mechanism behind the lobe. Ear cuffs however, are not placed on the lobe, but rather on the helix of the ear which is located at the upper-most part of the ear cartilage.
Clip-on earrings can be adjusted to make them more comfortable for the wearer. The snugness of the fit can be changed by folding over paper multiple times and inserting where the ear lobe would go. If the earrings are stored this way, the adjustment will gradually widen.
